How Much Drywall Do I Need?

Divide the wall and ceiling area by the sheet area (a 4 by 8 foot sheet is 32 square feet, a 4 by 12 is 48), round up, and add some extra for cuts. For finishing, USG says about 9 to 10 gallons of ready-mix joint compound and about 370 feet of paper tape per 1,000 square feet of board. Screws go every 16 inches on walls and every 12 inches on ceilings.

Sheets needed, with the maths

Sheet area is width times length. Georgia-Pacific lists its 1/2 inch board as 4 feet wide in lengths from 8 to 16 feet, so 4 by 8 is 32 square feet and 4 by 12 is 48 square feet.

Worked example: a 12 by 12 foot room with 8 foot walls. Walls: 4 x 12 x 8 = 384 square feet. Ceiling: 12 x 12 = 144 square feet. Total 528 square feet. In 4 by 8 sheets: 528 / 32 = 16.5, so 17 sheets. We did not find an official drywall waste figure; allowing about 10 percent is a rule of thumb, which gives 18.2, so buy 19. Subtract doors and windows only if they are large, because cutouts leave offcuts you rarely use.

Joint compound and tape

USG says about two 4.5 gallon pails (about 9 gallons) of its ultralightweight all purpose compound finish 1,000 square feet of board, and its all purpose compound submittal says about 10 gallons per 1,000 square feet. USG's paper joint tape is about 370 feet per 1,000 square feet.

For the 528 square foot example: compound is 528 / 1,000 x 9 to 10 = 4.8 to 5.3 gallons, so a 4.5 gallon pail plus a smaller one, or two pails. Tape is 528 / 1,000 x 370 = 195 feet, so one 250 foot roll.

Screw spacing

USG recommends screws every 12 inches on ceilings and every 16 inches on walls for non-fire-rated assemblies. The Georgia-Pacific submittal for its 1/2 inch board gives the same spacing with 1 inch screws. Fire-rated assemblies have their own fastening rules, so follow the tested assembly.

Hanging direction and thickness

USG says 1/2 inch ceiling panels must go perpendicular to the framing, while 5/8 inch panels can go either way. CertainTeed says hanging sheets horizontally on walls reduces the length of seams by about 25 percent, and that panels are available up to 16 feet long and 54 inches wide to suit 9 foot walls.

We did not find an official page explaining which thickness to use where, so check your local building code and the board maker's guidance for fire-rated or sagging-prone locations.

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets of drywall for a 10 by 12 room?

With 8 foot walls: perimeter 44 ft x 8 = 352 sq ft plus ceiling 120 sq ft = 472 sq ft. In 4 by 8 sheets that is 472 / 32 = 14.75, so 15 sheets before extra for cuts.

How much joint compound do I need?

About 9 to 10 gallons per 1,000 square feet of board, according to USG figures for its ready-mix compounds.

How far apart should drywall screws be?

12 inches on ceilings and 16 inches on walls, per USG and Georgia-Pacific.
